The Craniosacral Approach to the basics is designed to introduce the participants to a standard protocol based on the cranial work of William Garner Sutherland, D.O. It is a four-day class consisting of lectures, demonstrations, and supervised practice sessions throughout each day. This protocol/class is designed to work with people five years of age and older.

Day One consists of learning the evaluative technique of the craniosacral rhythm and learn evaluation of body restrictions. Energetic techniques from Applied Quantum Physics, Oriental medicine and Qi Gong will be learned to enhance student palpation skills in an easy and practical fashion. this day is focused on palpation and evaluation through touch.

Day Two will introduce the participants to concepts of fascia where they will learn the diaphragm and and explore motion and restriction in the soft tissue of the body. We will treat restrictions that af fect the pelvis, respiration, digestion and swallowing. A important part of the day is focused on study and treatment of the occiput and Core link (dural tube) techniques will allow treatment of sacroiliac dysfunctions.

Day Three Dr. Upledger's Pressurstat model and Dr. Sutherland’s model of the Primary Respiratory Mechanism which drives the craniosacral system will be covered. The V-spread technique will also be covered for use with specific areas of inflammation, and the Stillpoint technique, which begins and ends the craniosacral therapy session, encourages harmony within the body., are also themes of this day.

Day Four will continue with Dr. Sutherland’s exploration of the sutures and new strategies focusing on the intracranial membranes and their effects on fluid and bone. Techniques pertaining to the frontal, parietal, sphenoid, and temporal bones will be covered.

Day Five will introduce the theory and treatment techniques for the TMJ (temporal mandibular joi nt). A slide presentation will illustrate the microscopic research done by Dr. Ernest Retzlaff from Michigan State University. Participants will observe a demonstration by the instructor of the complete protocol covered in the 5 days, practice, and receive a complete protocol as well. An overview of the Cranial Approach/CST-2 class will be covered.

CST-1 follows a simple format with each technique building upon the next in a very linear fashion. Participants will come away from the class with a ready to use protocol for their own practice. Therapists in the field who already have very successful practices, will find this work to be a nice complement to their own style of bodywork.
